Scientist in the UK have discovered a rising Superbug type of Gonorrhea which is resistant to treatment
Usually Gonorrhea is curable with two drugs- azithromycin and ceftriaxone, but resistance to the former has been rising.Gonorrhea may seem harmless as it can be easily treated with pills.
However, when left untreated, it can cause long term devastating effects such as long-term infertility, impotence, pelvic inflammatory disease and can be passed on to children during pregnancy.
“If strains of gonorrhea emerge that are resistant to both azithromycin and ceftriaxone, treatment options would be limited as there is currently no new antibiotic available to treat the infection,” Dr. Gwenda Hughes, head of the sexually transmitted infections unit at Public Health England, told the BBC.
