Infertility in Men: Everything You Should Know Made Simple

 

In Nigeria, male infertility is hardly talked about. In fact by the default, the woman is automatically seen as the problem when a couple have been trying to get pregnant to no avail.This is not always the case.
Male infertility is real and should be looked into.According to research of many couples facing infertility 40% of the time, its woman’s fault, 40% its  the man’s fault and 20%  of the time its the fault of both them.
Today, we will talk about different aspects of infertility as it affects men.
First things first-how do you determine that you have a fertility problem? This is the rule of thumb- if you have been consistently trying to get a woman who is less than 30 years old pregnant for up to one year to no avail, then there is a problem.But that does not instantly mean that you are the problem.

CAUSES OF INFERTILITY IN MEN

There are a lot of different reasons a man can become infertile.Let’s look some of the most things that may make a man more prone to infertility.If you are a

  1. Chronic smoker
  2. Take hard drugs
  3. An alcoholic
  4.  If you take certain medications such as testosterone replacement therapy, or drugs used for the treatment of arthritis, high blood pressure, depression, cancer, infection, or a digestive disorderhave a chronic illness, such as diabetes, cancer, or thyroid disease
  5. Your nutrition is not right. You had one or two undescended testicles when you were a baby or child
  6. Had mumps after puberty
  7. You have a hernia in your groin
  8. You have had a sexually transmitted infection, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea

AGE A MAN CAN BECOME INFERTILE

Age does affect men’s fertility but not as dramtically as it does women.It is not uncommon to see an 80 year old man get a woman pregnant.

Male Fertility Test

After you suspect that there may be a problem with your fertility.Visit the doctor. The  test you will most likely be subjected to is the semen analysis to determine if your sperm count is ok.
After this, if your sperm count is low.Yourblood testosterone, FSH, LH and prolactin levels will also be tested
