Agbadas and Kaftans: A Look at Nigerian Menswear Designer JZO’s ‘Babatunde’ 2015 Collection.

JZO’s collection titled, BABATUNDE is inspired by the legendary Yoruba belief of rebirth ‘Atunwa’, which implies that the original essence of our ancestors may indeed be reborn in a new form retaining it’s wisdom. The collection reflects a fabled journey of the Yoruba people from the Nile Valley to South-Western Nigeria.

Staying true to the minimalist aesthetic that has come to define JZO, the BABATUNDE collection comprises what is best described as playful Kaftan/Buba hybrids and smart Agbada pieces with very simple embroidery patterns, graphic necklines in an earth-tone colour palette, a mix of browns punctuated by vibrant shades of blue and burgundy.
